More and more Britons, Germans, Dutch and Scandinavians are swapping grey winters for a home by the Mediterranean in North Cyprus. A move abroad is easier when you know the order of the steps. This checklist takes you from the first visit to your first months on the island in 2026, so nothing important is forgotten.

Step 1: Visit and choose your area

Spend a week or two on the island before you decide, ideally in different seasons. Each region has its own character: Kyrenia (Girne) with its harbour and mountains, the long sandy beaches of İskele, historic Famagusta and the capital Nicosia. Our area-by-area guide helps you compare them.

  • Check daily life: supermarkets, doctors, the nearest hospital and the drive to Ercan Airport.
  • Think about the seasons: some resort areas are lively in summer and very quiet in winter.
  • Families: look at the distance to international schools.

Step 2: Entry and residence

Citizens of the UK and the EU can enter North Cyprus without a visa and stay for up to 90 days. For a longer stay you apply for a residence permit online through the TRNC Ministry of Interior. Owning property opens a simple route: owners can receive a residence permit of up to 10 years, depending on the value of their property. All details are in our guide to the 10-year residence permit.

Step 3: Buy or rent your home

Many newcomers rent for the first months and buy once they know the area. Others buy straight away, because a property is also the basis for residence. Foreign buyers need permission to purchase, which is a routine process, and the transfer fee for a first property is temporarily 4% until 5 January 2027. Every step is explained in our guide to buying property in North Cyprus.

Step 4: Paperwork and money

  1. Bank account: open a local account with your passport for bills and everyday costs.
  2. Payments from home: pensions and savings can stay in your home account and be transferred when needed.
  3. Tax at home: ask a tax adviser in your home country how moving abroad affects your tax residence and pension.
  4. Documents: keep copies of passports, birth and marriage certificates and medical records.

How property payments work is explained in our guide to paying for property in North Cyprus.

Step 5: Health insurance and healthcare

A residence permit requires state health insurance, and many residents add private cover. The European Health Insurance Card is not valid in North Cyprus, so travel with private or travel insurance until everything is in place. Hospitals, emergencies and pharmacies are explained in our guide to healthcare in North Cyprus.

Step 6: Car, belongings and pets

  • Car: a car is almost essential. Read our guide to driving licences in North Cyprus before you arrive.
  • Belongings: furniture and boxes usually travel by sea or by road and ferry via Turkey; ask removal companies for a door-to-door quote.
  • Pets: plan the microchip, vaccinations and health certificate early, and confirm the current import rules with the veterinary authority before you travel.

Step 7: Settling in

Register for electricity and water in your name, set up internet and a local mobile number, and get to know your neighbours. English is widely spoken, and there are active British, German and Scandinavian communities with clubs, charities and events. Everyday costs compared with home are shown in our guide to the cost of living compared with Germany and the UK.
