Healthcare in North Cyprus for Foreigners (2026): Hospitals, Insurance and Emergencies
For anyone who plans to live in North Cyprus for part of the year or for good, one question comes before the choice of a home: how good is healthcare, and how does it work for foreigners? The short answer is reassuring. The island has modern private hospitals, well-equipped state hospitals and pharmacies in every town, and most areas are within a short drive of a hospital. This guide explains how healthcare works for foreign residents in 2026.

State and private healthcare
North Cyprus has two systems that work side by side. State hospitals provide general and emergency care, while private hospitals and clinics offer shorter waiting times, private rooms and a wide range of specialists. Many foreign residents use private care for planned treatment and check-ups, and know that the state hospitals are there for emergencies.
- State hospitals: Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital in Nicosia, Dr. Akçiçek State Hospital in Kyrenia and Famagusta State Hospital are the main public hospitals.
- Private hospitals: Near East University Hospital in Nicosia is a large teaching hospital; the Dr. Suat Günsel University of Kyrenia Hospital serves the Kyrenia area; and Near East University Hospital Yeniboğaziçi, opened in 2022, is the closest major private hospital for Famagusta, İskele and Long Beach.
- Clinics and dentists: every town has private clinics, specialist practices and dentists, and many doctors speak English.
Emergencies and pharmacies
In a medical emergency, call 112 for an ambulance. The state hospitals and the larger private hospitals run 24-hour emergency departments. Pharmacies (eczane) are found in every town; outside normal opening hours, one pharmacy in each area stays open on a rotating duty basis, and its address is posted on the door of the others.

Health insurance and residence
A residence permit in North Cyprus requires state health insurance, which is arranged as part of the application. Many residents add private health insurance from a local insurer for faster access to private hospitals and specialists. For applicants over 60, the health report that is otherwise part of the residence application is not required.
Please note that the European Health Insurance Card is not valid in North Cyprus. Visitors should travel with travel or private health insurance until their residence and insurance are in place. The rules for residence through property are explained in our guide to the 10-year residence permit.
Choosing a home close to good healthcare
For families and retirees, the distance to a hospital is one of the most practical questions when choosing a home. We recommend an area within about 30 minutes of a hospital:
- Kyrenia (Girne): the state hospital and the private university hospital are both close to town.
- Nicosia: the largest choice of hospitals and specialists on the island.
- Famagusta, İskele and Long Beach: the state hospital in Famagusta and the private hospital in Yeniboğaziçi.

A healthy everyday life
Good healthcare is only part of the picture. With mild winters, around 300 sunny days a year, walks along the sea, fresh local food and a calm pace of life, many residents say they feel healthier in North Cyprus than at home. Seafront promenades in Kyrenia and İskele invite a walk every morning.
