Near East University (NEU): The Complete Guide to Study & Living in Nicosia
Near East University (NEU), or Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi, is the largest university in North Cyprus. Its campus in Nicosia (Lefkoşa) includes a university hospital, several museums and one of the widest choices of programmes on the island, from medicine and engineering to law and artificial intelligence. This guide explains what international students need to know for the 2026–2027 academic year: rankings and accreditations, admission and English requirements, fees and scholarships, accommodation, residence permits and daily life in the capital. It also covers what parents should consider if they are thinking about buying a home in Nicosia.

Rankings and accreditations
NEU has risen quickly in the international rankings. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 it is placed in the 401–500 band, up from 601–800 the year before, and in the THE Impact Rankings 2026 it is placed 39th. In the QS World University Rankings 2027 it is in the 791–800 band.
Important accreditations include:
- Medicine: the Faculty of Medicine, founded in 2008, is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and is accredited under World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) standards.
- Engineering: around ten engineering programmes, including Electrical and Electronic, Computer, Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering, hold ASIIN accreditation from Germany.
- Recognition: NEU is authorised by YÖDAK, the higher-education authority of North Cyprus, and recognised by Turkey’s Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
Faculties and programmes
NEU offers one of the broadest ranges of subjects in the region, including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, Law, Engineering, Architecture, Business, Education, Communication and the Arts. In 2025–2026 it opened a new Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics, with programmes such as AI Engineering and Cyber Security Engineering.
A major advantage for health students is the Near East University Hospital on campus. It opened to the public in 2010 and is a large teaching hospital, so medical, dental and nursing students train in a real clinical setting.
Admission and English requirements
Most undergraduate programmes are taught in English. To start a degree directly, students need one of the following:
- 70 or more in NEU’s own English Proficiency Test;
- IELTS 6.0 or higher;
- TOEFL (paper-based) 550 or higher.
Students who do not meet the level join the English Preparatory School, which runs for up to two semesters. Those who progress quickly can start their department after one semester.
Tuition fees and scholarships
NEU offers international students a scholarship of up to 50% in all departments except Medicine and Dentistry. Fees differ by programme, and medicine and dentistry are significantly more expensive than other subjects. Because the fee list is updated every year, we recommend checking the current figures on NEU’s official programmes and fees page, or asking our team to confirm them for you, before planning your budget.
Accommodation
NEU has around 5,500 dormitory beds in separate buildings for women and men, with rooms for one to four students, as well as apartment-style dormitories. Many older students rent apartments in Nicosia instead, where there is a wide choice of options near the campus.
Campus life
The campus is large and well equipped, with sports facilities, a congress centre, a large library and several museums. The best known is the Cyprus Car Museum, the only classic car museum in the country, whose oldest car dates from 1899. Nicosia is the capital, so students also have easy access to shops, cafés, government offices and the historic walled city.
Getting around
NEU runs free shuttle buses for students from early morning until late evening, linking the campus with central Nicosia and with Kyrenia, Famagusta and Güzelyurt. Ercan Airport is a short drive from the city. Flights to North Cyprus go via Turkey, so check whether you need a Turkish transit visa.
Residence permit and health insurance
International students must register and apply for a student residence permit within two months of arriving. The application is made online and includes a health check with a blood test and approvals from the health ministry, the tax office and immigration. Health insurance is compulsory; NEU’s International Office helps students arrange it. Fees are set every year, so ask the university for the current amounts.
Can students work while studying?
Yes. International students can take a part-time job with a student work permit, which the employer applies for at the Ministry of Labour. After graduation, the permit can be converted into a regular work permit with the same employer, which makes it a great first step into a career in North Cyprus.
Where is an NEU degree recognised?
NEU degrees are built for an international career:
- Turkey and North Cyprus: NEU is recognised by YÖK, Turkey’s Council of Higher Education, and its programmes appear in YÖK’s official placement system. It is also authorised by YÖDAK.
- Worldwide listing: NEU is listed in the World Higher Education Database (WHED) of the International Association of Universities, the UNESCO-linked reference used by recognition offices around the world.
- Medicine, USA and Canada: NEU’s Faculty of Medicine has been listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools since 2013. According to the university, this allows graduates to apply to ECFMG, the route to the US medical licensing exams (USMLE). The faculty is accredited by SCUME, an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
- Iran: NEU reports that all its health faculties, including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences, are accredited by Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education and included in its list of recommended universities.
- Europe: ten engineering programmes carry accreditation from ASIIN, a German agency registered on the European quality register (EQAR).
Together with its rise in the THE and QS world rankings, this makes NEU one of the most internationally visible universities in the region. If you would like us to confirm the details for your programme and home country, our team is happy to help.
Living in Nicosia: renting or buying
As the capital and home to several universities, Nicosia has year-round demand for rental apartments, and daily life does not slow down in winter as it can on the coast. Some families prefer to buy an apartment for their child instead of paying rent for the length of the degree, which can be six years for medicine, and then keep it as a rental or sell it later. If you are considering this, compare the total cost carefully and read our buyer’s guide to North Cyprus property. Kyrenia, about 30 minutes away, is another option if you prefer to live by the sea.

You can also compare it with Eastern Mediterranean University and Cyprus International University in our other guides.
