Rankings: which university is ranked highest?

In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, NEU is the highest-ranked of the three, in the 401–500 band after a fast rise from 601–800 the year before. It is also placed 39th in the THE Impact Rankings 2026. EMU and CIU are both in the 601–800 band. Subject rankings show where each one shines: EMU is placed 301–400 for Business and Economics, and CIU is placed 301–400 for both Business and Economics and Social Sciences. In the QS World University Rankings, EMU was placed 691st in the 2025 edition and NEU is in the 791–800 band in the 2027 edition.

Medicine and dentistry

All three universities have faculties of medicine and dentistry, and each one has a clear strength:

  • NEU has the Near East University Hospital on its own campus, open to the public since 2010, so medical, dental and nursing students train in a real clinical setting from early on. Its Faculty of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and accredited by SCUME, an agency recognised by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME).
  • EMU‘s medicine programmes are recognised by ECFMG, the body that certifies international medical graduates for the United States, and its pharmacy programme holds American ACPE accreditation.
  • CIU‘s Faculty of Medicine is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools with an ECFMG Sponsor Note, and its Faculty of Pharmacy is included in the World List of Pharmacy Schools of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP).

At all three universities, medicine and dentistry cost noticeably more than other subjects and have their own scholarship rules, so check the official fee information for these programmes first.

Engineering, business and law

  • Engineering: EMU states that it is the only university in North Cyprus with ABET-accredited engineering programmes (USA), covering eight fields from Computer to Civil and Mechanical Engineering. NEU has around ten engineering programmes accredited by ASIIN from Germany, and it opened a new Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Informatics in 2025–2026. CIU’s Computer, Electrical and Electronic, Industrial and Civil Engineering programmes hold MÜDEK accreditation.
  • Business: EMU’s business and economics programmes and many of CIU’s business programmes are accredited by FIBAA, and CIU’s Accounting and Finance programme is also recognised by ACCA.
  • Architecture and law: EMU’s architecture programme holds NAAB accreditation, and CIU’s law programme is accredited by AHPGS. NEU offers one of the widest choices of subjects in the region, from law and architecture to veterinary medicine.

Tuition fees and scholarships

All three universities reward international students with scholarships, but they work in different ways:

  • EMU publishes an official yearly fee list for international students. Every student receives a partial scholarship, set by academic results and shown in the admission letter.
  • NEU offers a scholarship of up to 50% in all departments except Medicine and Dentistry and updates its fee list every year.
  • CIU gives every international undergraduate a 50% tuition scholarship, with merit scholarships of up to 100%, and its online fee calculator shows the exact fee for your country and programme.

Fees change every year, so always use the official fee pages, or ask our team to confirm the current figures for your programme.

Campus life and location

EMU is in Famagusta, a historic walled city by the sea. The campus has its own beach club, and the Spring Festival every May is one of the biggest student events on the island. Free buses run around the campus, across Famagusta and to Kyrenia.

NEU is in Nicosia, the capital, with a large and well-equipped campus, a congress centre and several museums, including the Cyprus Car Museum. Free shuttles link the campus with central Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta and Güzelyurt.

CIU is on the edge of Nicosia and only about 15 minutes from Ercan Airport. Its 18 dormitory buildings are a few minutes’ walk from the faculties, and there are more than 50 clubs and over 200 events a year.

Which university is right for you?

  • Choose NEU if you want the highest-ranked university of the three, a university hospital on campus for medicine or dentistry, or the widest choice of subjects in the capital.
  • Choose EMU if you want a state university with ABET-accredited engineering, strong business and architecture programmes, and student life in a seaside city.
  • Choose CIU if you want a guaranteed 50% scholarship, a compact campus close to the airport and accredited business, engineering and health programmes.

Living near the campus: renting or buying

Each university has its own housing market. Around EMU, families look at apartments in Famagusta close to the campus, while the long beaches of Iskele are only about 20 minutes away. NEU students live across Nicosia, and Kyrenia by the sea is about 30 minutes away. Near CIU, the Gönyeli and Hamitköy areas are popular with students and staff.

Many parents prefer to buy an apartment instead of paying rent for four to six years. The child has a safe home during the degree, and afterwards the apartment can be rented out to the next student or sold. Our guide to buying an apartment near a university in North Cyprus explains the best areas, the rules for foreign buyers and the rental demand around each campus.
