Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU): The Complete Guide to Study & Living in North Cyprus
Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), known locally as Doğu Akdeniz Üniversitesi (DAÜ), is a state university in Famagusta and one of the best-known universities in North Cyprus. More than 16,000 students from over 100 countries study there, most of them in English. Rankings and accreditations
In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, EMU is placed in the 601–800 band, and in the 301–400 band for Business and Economics. It also appears in the THE Young University Rankings and the U.S. News Best Global Universities list. In the QS World University Rankings 2025 edition, it was placed 691st.
Several programmes hold international, programme-level accreditation:
- ABET (USA): Computer, Electrical and Electronic, Civil, Mechanical, Industrial, Management, Mechatronics and Software Engineering. EMU states that it is the only university in North Cyprus with ABET-accredited engineering programmes.
- FIBAA: business and economics programmes, Tourism Management and programmes of the School of Computing and Technology.
- AQAS: Interior Architecture, English Language Teaching and Pre-School Teacher Education.
- Others: NAAB (Architecture), CIDA (Interior Architecture), ACPE (Pharmacy), UNWTO TedQual (Tourism) and more.
All EMU programmes are recognised by Turkey’s Council of Higher Education (YÖK) and by YÖDAK, the higher-education authority of North Cyprus. EMU is also a member of the European University Association (EUA).
Faculties and programmes
EMU teaches across a wide range of fields: Arts and Sciences, Business and Economics, Communication, Computer and Information Sciences, Engineering, Architecture, Education, Law, Health Sciences, Tourism, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Medicine. Engineering, architecture and business are among its best-known areas, and the health faculties have grown quickly in recent years.
Admission and English requirements
An IELTS or TOEFL certificate is not required to apply. Students without one can take EMU’s own English Proficiency Exam on arrival. Those who do not reach the required level study first at the English Preparatory School before starting their degree.
- To start most degree programmes directly: 60/100 in the EMU exam, or IELTS 5.5, TOEFL iBT 65 or PTE 42.
- For Medicine and Translation and Interpreting: 70/100, or IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 72 or PTE 50.
- Certificates must be less than two years old. Graduates of schools in English-speaking countries are usually exempt.
Tuition fees and scholarships for 2026–2027
EMU publishes an official fee list for newly registered international students. Fees are per year, in US dollars, and already include VAT, registration and the student services fee. Every international student receives a partial scholarship, and the level is set by academic results and shown in the admission letter.

A small number of full scholarships (100% tuition) are available, limited to two students per country, and an all-inclusive scholarship with accommodation and meals is offered to the very top graduates for the September intake. Always check the latest fee list on EMU’s website before you apply.
Accommodation
Students can choose between five dormitories run by EMU and around a dozen private dormitories on campus, as well as apartments in the city. Dormitory fees are separate from tuition. Many students live in the dormitories in their first year and move into a shared apartment later.
Campus life
The campus has a sports complex, a health centre, libraries, cafés and restaurants, and its own beach club within walking distance. There are dozens of student clubs and societies, and the university’s Spring Festival every May is one of the biggest student events on the island. With students from so many countries, the atmosphere is very international.
Getting around
EMU runs free bus services for students: a campus ring line, routes across Famagusta and buses to Kyrenia. Ercan Airport is about a 40-minute drive away. Flights to North Cyprus go via Turkey, so check whether you need a Turkish transit visa.
Residence permit and health insurance
International students must register with the university and apply for a student residence permit within two months of arriving. The application is made online, followed by a health check with a blood test, a payment at the tax office and approval by the immigration authorities. Health insurance is compulsory and is arranged through EMU’s Student Services Office. Fees are set every year, so ask the university for the current amounts.
Can students work while studying?
Yes. International students can work part-time with a student work permit, which the employer applies for at the Ministry of Labour. On campus, EMU also offers student assistantships of up to 60 hours a month. They fit around classes, bring in pocket money and look great on a CV.
Where is an EMU degree recognised?
An EMU degree opens doors far beyond Cyprus. According to the university’s official recognition pages:
- Turkey and North Cyprus: all EMU programmes are recognised by YÖK, Turkey’s Council of Higher Education, and by YÖDAK.
- United Kingdom: all EMU programmes are recognised by UK ENIC, the UK’s national agency for qualifications. The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) also recognises EMU’s civil engineering programmes.
- United States: EMU’s medicine programmes are recognised by ECFMG, the body that certifies international medical graduates for the US, and its engineering, architecture and pharmacy programmes hold American accreditations (ABET, NAAB and ACPE).
- Further countries: EMU’s official recognitions document includes recognition letters and listings from Germany (anabin), Italy, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran (Ministry of Health and Ministry of Science), Pakistan, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Palestine, Nigeria, Tanzania and Chad.
- International networks: EMU is a member of the European University Association (EUA), the International Association of Universities (IAU) and the Magna Charta Observatory.
